⑮ Outline of work on global warming

Ewing and Don's proposal was the last to have an impact as a spectacular 19th-century-style climate model. The only other option for understanding the physics of climate was the mathematical model. But in a century of effort, no one has been able to derive a set of mathematical functions that approximate the behavior of the real atmosphere.

It was John von Neumann, a brilliant mathematician at Princeton University, who energetically devised a way to simulate the explosion of a nuclear weapon. Von Neumann insisted on using a calculator for numerical weather forecasts.

In 1955, the numerical model created by Norman Philips was the world's first "general circulation model (GCM)" showing weather phenomena such as jet streams and realistically visible cyclones. However, with the passage of time in the calculation, the numerical value of the airflow pattern deviated from the actual value and went out of control.

Brooks, Ewing, Don and others wondered if the entire climate system was based on a very delicate balance, and even small perturbations could cause major changes. Amplification by perturbation feedback.
